Chapped lips and how to treat it?

 Chapped lips are a term used to describe dry lips. Chapped lips can be caused by excessive licking of the lips, changes in weather and by the side effect of some medications like Vitamin A supplements and chemotherapy drugs.

 

 Our lips are very delicate structure. The skin on our lips is very thin and can be affected by changes in temperature, low moisture and exposure to the sun. Moreover, our lips do not contain any oil glands, it is unable to produce its natural moisture. As a result, they become dry, cracked and peeling. 

 

 There are so many ways to treat chapped. We’ll share with you so of the useful methods to prevent chapped lips. 

  1. Using a good Lip Balm.

 

 Always use a soothing and moisturizing lip balm that keeps your lips hydrating without drying them out. Do not apply scented or flavoured lip balms especially mint flavour, as they can leave the lips more chapped than before. Common drying ingredients in the balm are menthol, camphor and phenol. 

 Ingredients like petroleum, beeswax, lanolin and ceramides are very effective for the chapped lips. 

 

  1. Natural Remedies.

 

 Home remedies can be very effective for treating chapped lips. Honey, Aloe Vera, cucumber, green tea, coconut oil has dual properties. They can be helpful to treat chapped lips but can also anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. You can apply directly on your lips to take maximum benefits. 

 

  1. Keep yourself hydrated. 

 Dry lips are a sign of dehydration too. Dehydration occurs when your body losses more water than your intake. When you are dehydrated, your body pulls the water from certain areas that do not require water in an emergency and shift the water to the vital organs. This can cause dryness in your skin and also, make your lips dry and cracked. It is recommended to take water throughout a day and keep yourself hydrated. Our daily water requirement depends on several factors such as age, sex, the temperature of surroundings and physical activity. It is estimated to take 3 to 4-liter of water daily. 

 

  1. Humidifier. 

 During winter, your room or a house requires a humidifier to add moisture in the air. Moreover, heaters in the room can further reduce the moisture in the air. So, you need to add a humidifier in the room to save your skin and lips from drying out. 

 

  1. Avoid Smoking.

 Smoking can keep your lips dry and change the colour of your lips to black. Smokers often have a lip balm in their pockets all the time. So, smoking cessation can prevent dry lips from cracking. 

 

 One topical medicine known as lanolin can accelerate the repair of lips. Always consult your dermatologist in case of any allergy and worsening of the condition.
