Fibrillin and its skin benefits
What is Fibrillin?
As collagen is the most abundant protein in the extracellular matrix of the skin same as elastic fibers are the largest protein in the extracellular matrix of the skin. Elastic fibre consists of two components:
- Trop elastin
- Micro fibrillin.
Fibrillin is the structural component of the microfibrillar network, which provide support and long-range elasticity to the skin. There are three types of Fibrillin but type 1 is the most important in providing structural support to the skin.
How Fibrillin provide structural supports to the skin?
Fibrillin are the key structural component of the skin and integral part of the skin elastic fiber network. Microfiber bundles act as a glue in the dermal epithelial junction and provide the elastic connection between them.
Studies have shown us that keratinocytes, a specialized skin cell produces both fibrillin type 1 and fibrillin type 2 and enhances the expression of collagen. Keratinocytes coordinate their secretion and deposition in the skin and act as a key factor in skin remodeling.
The role of Fibrillin in skin ageing.
Studies have shown us that fibrillin and its associated microfibrillar network undergo extensive remodeling after sun irradiation. This remodeling leads us to extensive wrinkling, loss of elasticity and signs of skin ageing.
Another study has shown us that after application of cosmetic OTC formulation there is marked improvement in wrinkling and loss of skin elasticity. This research proved the cosmetic application of fibrillin-1 as a biomarker for the repair of the photoaged dermis. There was markedly improved in skin elasticity and wrinkling after the trial of six months of use.
Marfan syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by a defect in the gene that encodes Fibrillin-1. It leads to defects in the skeletal, cardiac and ocular system.
Although Fibrillin-1 is not very much known in the skincare industry, research are going on this protein to make it fruitful. Fibrillin-1 is thought to be the main culprit in the photoaged skin. By repair of the skin, Fibrillin and deposition of the new fibrillin is thought to provide benefits in photoaged skin and can improve wrinkling and elasticity of the skin.
