How can the Corona Virus affect your skin?

Originated and reported 1st in Wuhan, China, the coronavirus disease or Covid-19 is an infectious disease caused by coronavirus recently named as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This disease has gone global now and is an ongoing pandemic. The toll of COVID-19 cases has reached millions and increasing day by day.

Common symptoms of this disease include fever, shortness of breath, cough, and loss of smell and appetite. While most cases are mild, the ones progressing to the severity are termed as acute respiratory distress syndrome with multi-organ failure and septic shock. The onset of symptoms from exposure occurs within more or less 5 days but this range varies from two to fourteen days.

This disease is caused by as we all know SARS-CoV-2 which is enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus. This virus has spike protein which aid in entering the host cell by binding to the ACE2 receptors and thus virus damages the epithelial cells of the lungs.

Recent studies have shown us that Coronavirus can also affect your skin. One study conducted in the hospital of Italy showed us that skin involvement is found in 20 per cent of the patients and half of these patients have skin manifestations from the onset of the disease. Some cases were also reported in Thailand. In Thailand, due to the similarity of these symptoms with Dengue fever, many patients were misdiagnosed as Dengue.

 Common symptoms

The most common manifestations in the affected patients are widespread red rash or erythematous rash. Few patients developed urticarial, chicken poxes like blisters and hives. This skin manifestation occurs mostly on the trunk.

The reason for developing these skin manifestations are still unknown. Researchers are working to find whether it is caused by the body’s immune response to infection or some hormones are involved.

 Maculopapular Rash

It is associated with more severe disease. There are widespread, multiple red bumps and red patches especially on the truck.

 Hair Fall

Hair loss occurs in severe infection. The body shuts down unnecessary activities and your hair starts to fall. This hair fall is not permanent; the hair will recover in time if your blood iron level is normal.

 Summary

Fortunately, you need not panic, these skin conditions are not long-lasting. You can recover from these symptoms with time. It is too early to link these skin manifestations with coronavirus, more researches are required to completely understand the mechanism involved.

Always consult your GP or Covid clinic if you found any irrelevant skin symptoms.
