Regions closer to the equator get direct sunlight and are hotter. People living in these warm areas are aware of the rash that comes in the summer and goes in the winter. We are talking about heat rash or prickly heat rash, or miliaria.

Heat rash appears as clear fluid-filled blisters to red bumps with itching. Sometimes, it gets infected, and pus-filled vesicles appear. These rashes do not pass from one person to another.

How does Prickly heat rash develop?

Your skin is responsible for protecting your body against external harmful environmental factors. Your skin also regulates your body temperature through sweating. The sweat is produced in the sweat glands that are present in the dermis or deeper inside. The production of sweat is regulated by the temperature control centre present in the brain. This sweat exits the body through smaller ducts present in the skin.

Heat rash develops when these ducts get clogged, and the sweat cannot exit the body through these smaller ducts. Sweat gets entrapped under the skin surface and causes inflammation and rash.

What are the causes?

Babies sweat glands are immature and are unable to remove the sweat from the body. Hot weather, tight dressing, and fever can lead to excessive sweating and the formation of prickly heat rash.
Skin creases like armpits, neck and groins develop heat rash due to minimum airflow.
Tight clothing also stimulates heat rash.

What is the treatment of heat rash?

Home remedies

Try to wear loose clothes in summer.

Take plenty of water and fluids.

Take baths and showers frequently.

Apply something cold. You can purchase prickly heat powders from the markets.

Medical Treatment

Apply calamine lotion to reduce itching and swelling.

Take anti-histamine tablets.

Apply hydrocortisone creams to prevent inflammation.

When the rash gets infected and containing pus-filled vesicles. Consult your doctor and start a topical antibiotic.

Complications

Don’t worry, heat rash usually disappears on its own but, if it gets infected you need to consult your doctor as soon as possible.
